At this time, STE is considering two 21st Century technologies – hydrogen-powered battery-electric (hydrail) and elevated magnetic levitate (Sky Train)
Hydrail Technology
This technology is currently being used in Germany and Japan. Hydrogen gas is stored in the light rail vehicle (usually above the passenger compartment). The hydrogen gas is used to produce electricity. This electricity is used to power electric motors on each wheel of the hydrail vehicle.
This technology significantly reduces the operating cost of the vehicle. The water released by the electrolyzing process can be captured and used again to produce hydrogen gas.
This technology uses magnetic levitation to move the vehicle along an elevated track. It is currently being used Wuhan, China. It opened in September 26, 2023. The project is 6.5 miles long. The maximum speed is 74.5 mph. This technology does not require any driver. The technology uses multiple seismic mitigation technologies to ensure operational stability and is completely fireproof.
